Egyptian Culture

The culture of Egypt is rooted in thousands of years of ancient history. Though modern culture has been subject to change, many of the traditions and customs have remained.

In order to have an enjoyable trip to Egypt, understanding the culture is paramount. Not only will it allow you to act according to their religion out of respect, but it will make the locals feel comfortable and welcoming to you as a tourist.

The Official Language of Egypt

For nearly 13 centuries, the official language in Egypt has been Arabic. Several characteristics of the Arabic language, however, have been modernized and influenced largely by the French and English languages.

This way of Arabic is widely known as Egyptian Arabic; the language of the modern-day people…

While certain sentence structures, slang, and phraseology have changed over the years, the fact remains; Arabic is the official written and spoken language of Egypt.

Egyptian Cultural Values

The Egyptian people are known to be warm and hospitable, mild-mannered and kind. With strong values rooted in religion, Egyptians are largely family-oriented, traditionally celebratory, and honorary to their heritage.

Because of the social structure of Egypt, little mobility is realized when it comes to status. Social class is traditionally dictated by family lineage rather than wealth, and responsibility is dependent on your sex. Although this is a very traditional way of living, most Egyptians are proud of who they are and they’re not afraid to show it.

Nevertheless, though strict in their beliefs, Egyptians know how to celebrate and have fun.

Traditions & Customs

Egyptian culture is deeply rooted in respect and honor. As such, you’ll recognize quickly that the majority of their customs are traditional in nature and strong in belief and practice.

Well-known in western culture, Egyptians value the handshake upon first meetings; and, when it comes to invites and parties, it’s respectful to offer a gift of appreciation;

As you can see, Egyptian customs are all about politeness, manners, and respect. If you follow these simple customs, you’ll be welcomed by all!

Final Thoughts

If you’re planning your Egyptian adventure, it’s important to first understand the culture. After all, you’re entering into their home, so it’s important to show respect and appreciation.

As long as you show them respect and are aware of the norms, you’ll enjoy your trip and the locals will welcome you with love.
